The approach is developmental. Although it covers the requisite material by proving things, it does not assume that students are already able at abstract work. Instead, it proceeds with a great deal of motivation, many computational examples, and exercises that range from routine verifications to (a few) challenges. The goal is, in the context of developing the usual material of an undergraduate linear algebra course, to help raise each student's level of mathematical maturity.

I got an A in Calculus 1 with Analytic Geometry, and I am very comfortable using programs like Mathematica, Maple, and to a degree: programming in Fortran 95. I have at least met, if not exceeded the requirements to teach myself linear algebra with this book. Although, guidance on occasion is advised in the preface of the book. It is also advised that the reader have taken at least a semester of Calculus. If one hasn't studied Calculus, it shouldn't be a problem to pick up this book, read carefully, do the problems, and learn quickly and easily. The reason behind that is, a student who has taken calculus REALLY had to learn quickly that mathematical concepts build upon themselves. Forgetting mathematical concepts, or telling oneself "I'm done with that section. It's all over. Now I can forget this stuff and worry about the next test" WILL cause some very serious problems in Calculus or any course afterwards.
Fortunately, this book starts out with solving systems of equations. Then you learn basic matrix operations, and your mathematical maturity builds throughout the course (by that, I mean proofs, notations, and other things that are major parts of upper level mathematics courses). I have a few other well known, highly regarded books, but none compare to Jim Hefferon's version.
Applications with computers are emphasized strongly, there are generally far more problems and examples than any other Linear Algebra book that I've read, and science applications, very unusually, are used as examples in this first-semester linear algebra book.
The first example actually uses a system of equations to balance a chemical formula. Now that I have this book, I can finally show my chemistry and physics professor how useful the subject is.
The book is also very good at being set up for not only self learning (there is even a hypothetical syllabus for one to use in the beginning of the book), but it's also designed to be a 1 semester classroom book for a Junior/Senior level Linear Algebra class.
All in all, this is a FANTASTIC book. Buy it. You won't regret it.

Linear Algebra Jim Hefferon 9781944325039 Books Reviews
I just feel like learning a little bit linear algebra as I have no idea what those matrix stuffs are, but I don't see the point why this book charges a whopping $4,500...maybe mathematicians are used to large numbers.
Excellent introductory book. Well done!
This book is very good -- organization, typesetting and visual presentation, clarity, reasonable rigor (not exaggerated, but not lacking), good examples, several exercises (from simple operational "calculate this" to others that require more thinking or involve modeling) -- overall, it's very good... Hefferon has clearly made a great effort to find relevant examples and to make everything as clear as possible. Lots of theorems are proved, but the book is *not* dense or terse -- on the contrary!
There is also some (just a bit, actually) computer code used as example (Scheme, C, Python, Octave, Fortran).
There are special sections on computer algebra systems, crystallography, voting paradoxes, projective geometry, for example.
Solutions to the exercises are available fro mthe author's website.
Undergrads having problems with Linear Algebra should check out this book.
By the way, the book is also available for free from his website (but the printed copy is absolutely worth the price)
Excellent.
This is probably the most simple book on linear algebra. It is excellent for a beginner like myself. You must buy this if you are just starting out with linear algebra. It's better than most expensive textbooks on the subject.
This is a Dover Book. Hence, not expensive.
Well written with good explanations.
The author continuously updates the contents of the book on his web site.
He has also posted the solutions-- good for those who have embarked on self study!
Exceptionally clear and well written. Introduces difficult concepts hently but thoroughly.
